How To Choose A Mattress To Fight Chronic Pain

One of the most overlooked ways to combat chronic pain is with the right mattress. It’s odd that our mattress is not given much thought when we spend about a third of our life on it.

While many people are touting pain treatments like CBD and others, it’s time to take a look at our mattress and see if we can treat our pain while we sleep.

Yes, some mattresses are expensive and may be out of reach for some. There are some that are affordable and still offer pain relief when chosen properly. If your pain is from a car accident, you should talk to a lawyer like Lamber Goodnow as it may be covered in a settlement, making it even more affordable.

To make sure you get the right mattress for pain, here are some things to look for when choosing.

Go for a hybrid

Memory foam mattresses have become all the rage and are indeed very comfortable. When you have back pain or other joint problems, then some of them may actually make your problem worse, however.

Many people sink into the mattresses and get stuck, so moving around becomes an issue. The other problem is that many don’t have the right support to keep your spine aligned.

A hybrid with memory foam layers and then pocketed springs underneath offer the best of both worlds. You get the comfort from the memory foam and then the support from the individually wrapped coils underneath.

This means that your pressure points like hips and shoulders can sink into the layers of foam, but the coils push back in other areas, so you have your spine aligned perfectly.

Memory foam has a bad reputation as making you overheat, but there are cooling foams now that keep that from happening.

Go for Medium Firm

A mattress that is too firm won’t allow your pressure points to sink in, and this will cause your pain actually to get worse. Even back sleepers will find that there is a need to sink in slightly so the lumbar region can curve naturally and not be totally straight.

On the other hand, a soft mattress doesn’t offer much support in the areas that shouldn’t sink into the mattress. Your hips and shoulders should sink in, but there needs to be some resistance there and for areas that don’t need to sink in.

Back sleepers will see their back all out of line as the torso will sink in much more than your legs. Side sleepers will also see their spine curved as the back will sink in along with the pressure points.

It all adds up to a spine out of alignment and joints that block the flow of blood around your body.

Conclusion

When you have the right mattress, not only will you feel pain relief, but the extra sleep will also allow your body to heal itself better. Don’t let your lack of sleep make your chronic pain even worse. Check out some new mattresses to manage your pain.
