Getting the Right Support with Compression Garments

When you think of compression garments, your mind likely goes right to knee-high compression socks. While socks are probably the most common when it comes to medical compression garments, there are actually many compression products on the market to assist in your recovery from a variety of different procedures. So, what are these products? And, what should we be looking for when it comes to support after surgery? Here is a quick guide to help you along the way to a quick recovery.

Benefits

Before we get started, you may be wondering what the benefits are of compression garments. As mentioned before, a lot of us are familiar with the idea of compression socks, which are great especially great for those at higher risk of blood clots. These socks help blood flow through the legs for those who are unable to walk around and get regular exercise, such as elderly patients unable to walk or individuals taking a long plane ride.

Other compression garments work a bit differently, but the same idea applies. All sorts of compression garments are available, from bras to bodysuits to binders. These work to reduce the risk of bleeding in areas of the body after surgery, increase blood flow, and help provide pain relief and support during the healing process. With the right support, you can heal more quickly and more efficiently.

Surgeries

Could you benefit from compression garments? They’re especially beneficial after procedures like:

Compression garments can significantly help with recovery from these surgeries, as well as others. A variety of products are available, from full-body compression shapewear to products that hone in on the affected parts of the body. It’s important to do your research, talk to your doctor, and find what product is right for you.

Grades

Along with each type of garment comes a variety of grades or classes. Just how much pressure you need to achieve the optimal support for your recovery should be a conversation between you and your surgeon and has a lot to do with where you are in the recovery process. Some different grades of compression vary from light to extra firm.

Time

A good regime for recovery with compression garments will likely use different products at different stages. After surgery, there are three post-op stages. During the first two weeks, you’ll be fresh out of surgery and will typically need very minor compression. The next month is considered stage two, and moderate compression will be needed. After the six-week mark, your body should be mostly healed, depending on the type of surgery, and can handle a stronger compression.

It is likely that, for the first few weeks, your surgeon will recommend leaving your garments on 24/7, but after, you should be able to sleep without them. Remember, as much of a pain as they might be, your quick and successful recovery is most important.
